Based only on what the posting says. Flags are a starting point for your first call, not a final judgment.

Questions to ask on the first call

Built from what this posting leaves out. How they answer tells you as much as what they say.

  1. 1.

What percentage of fully ramped reps hit quota last year?

OTE is what you could earn. This is how likely you are to earn it.

  2. 2.

What's the OTE, and what did the median rep earn last year?

Base is what you're guaranteed. OTE and the median show the upside.

  3. 3.

Who's the economic buyer, and who else is in the deal?

Selling to a CFO and selling to a developer are different jobs.

  4. 4.

What's the annual quota, and how was it set?

A quota built from real data is a target. Otherwise it's a hope.

  5. 5.

How long is ramp, and what's the quota during it?

Full quota on day one means you start behind.

  6. 6.

Why is this role open? Did someone leave, or is it new?

New headcount is growth. A replacement means someone left. Ask why.

When the offer comes

Save these for later. They land better once they've said yes to you.

  1. 1.

Can I see the full comp plan in writing, including clawbacks and accelerators?

What's in writing is what gets paid. Read it before you sign.

  2. 2.

Can I see the actual comp distribution for the team last year, not just the OTE?

The spread shows what most reps really take home. OTE is just the target.

  3. 3.

I'd be walking away from earned commission to join. Is there room for a sign-on bonus to help cover that?

Leaving money behind is a fair reason to ask. The worst answer is no.

Full posting
When a customer hits a thorny technical question, someone at Expel needs to have the answer. Fast, accurate, and complete. That's where you come in. As a Security Solutions Engineer (SSE), you're the technical backstop for our Customer Success organization. When our Customer Success Managers (CSMs), Technical Account Managers (TAMs), and Technical Support Engineers (TSEs) run into complex technical challenges, you're the person they turn to. You'll dig in, troubleshoot, and deliver answers that help our customers get the most out of Expel. You'll work closely with a team of technical experts and collaborate across Security, Detection & Response Engineering, and other Engineering teams to build a deep understanding of our platform, integrations, detection strategies, and security operations. Just as importantly, you'll turn that knowledge into documentation, enablement, and repeatable solutions that help the broader organization become more effective over time. Success in this role comes from having a "the buck stops here" mindset. You're someone who takes ownership, enjoys solving complex problems, and knows how to balance being a trusted technical resource with helping others become more self-sufficient. What Expel can do for you - Give you the opportunity to work with a wide variety of security technologies, platforms, and customer environments. - Deepen your expertise in managed detection and response (MDR), security operations, and the broader cybersecurity landscape. - Connect you with experienced security practitioners, engineers, and leaders across Expel and our customer base. - Provide hands-on exposure to complex technical challenges that require creative problem-solving and thoughtful troubleshooting. - Help you sharpen your consultative skills as you translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable guidance. - Give you the opportunity to influence how our Customer Success organization operates through documentation, enablement, and process improvements. - Surround you with a collaborative team that values technical curiosity, knowledge-sharing, and continuous improvement. What you can do for Expel - Serve as a trusted technical resource and escalation point for our Customer Success organization, providing timely, accurate, and thorough responses to technical questions. - Troubleshoot complex technical issues, perform root cause analysis, and help identify practical solutions that improve customer outcomes. - Partner with CSMs, TAMs, and TSEs to address technical challenges, occasionally joining customer conversations when deeper technical expertise is needed. - Collaborate with Security, Detection & Response Engineering, and other Engineering teams to develop a strong understanding of Expel's platform architecture, integrations, data flows, and detection and response capabilities. - Identify gaps in existing documentation and proactively create, maintain, and improve internal and external knowledge resources. - Help enable Customer Success teams to answer common technical questions independently, reducing repetitive inquiries and improving response times. - Maintain accurate records of technical inquiries, including request types and trends, to help the team identify recurring challenges and prioritize improvements. - Contribute to the team's operational processes, helping improve how technical requests are tracked, escalated, resolved, and documented. - Share your expertise with teammates and help build a culture of continuous learning, collaboration, and technical excellence. What you should bring with you - 5+ years of experience in the cybersecurity industry, ideally with exposure to technical troubleshooting, security operations, or consultative customer-facing roles. - Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills, with the ability to independently investigate and resolve complex technical challenges. - Technical depth in one or more security technology areas, including EDR, NDR, SIEM, cloud security, or related security platforms. - A solid understanding of detection strategies, security operations workflows, and the technical tradeoffs associated with different security solutions. - Familiarity with common attack vectors, threat tactics and techniques, frameworks such as MITRE ATT&CK, and the broader attack lifecycle. - Working knowledge of the cybersecurity landscape, including security products, service providers, and their relative strengths and limitations. - An understanding of security controls across common operating systems, cloud environments, and enterprise technologies, including Windows, Unix/Linux, AWS, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and network infrastructure. - Experience working with ticketing, case management, or operational workflow platforms such as Zendesk, ServiceNow, or similar tools. - Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical practitioners and business stakeholders. - A consultative approach to problem-solving, including active listening, thoughtful questioning, and the ability to understand the underlying issue before recommending a solution. - Sound judgment when prioritizing competing requests, managing challenging conversations, and knowing when to escalate. - A collaborative, curious mindset and a genuine interest in learning, sharing knowledge, and continuously improving how work gets done. - Awareness of how security challenges and priorities can differ across customer industries and environments. - A bachelor's degree or relevant security certifications are a plus, but they're not required.
