The job

What you'd do
Find new government work with cities, counties, state and federal agencies, school systems, and utilities, and partner with other contractors on bids. You'll find most of your own leads, often before bids are posted.
Who you'd sell to
Still reading the posting. Check back within the hour.
Where deals come from
Mostly you. Expect a lot of outbound: cold calls, emails and LinkedIn.

Questions to ask on the first call

Built from what this posting leaves out. How they answer tells you as much as what they say.

  1. 1.

What percentage of fully ramped reps hit quota last year?

OTE is what you could earn. This is how likely you are to earn it.

  2. 2.

What are the base and the OTE for this role?

No point investing hours before you know the number.

  3. 3.

What's the annual quota, and how was it set?

A quota built from real data is a target. Otherwise it's a hope.

  4. 4.

What share of last year's closed deals did reps source themselves?

Shows how much pipeline you'll have to build on your own.

  5. 5.

How long is ramp, and what's the quota during it?

Full quota on day one means you start behind.

  6. 6.

Why is this role open? Did someone leave, or is it new?

New headcount is growth. A replacement means someone left. Ask why.

› When the offer comes

Save these for later. They land better once they've said yes to you.

  1. 1.

Can I see the full comp plan in writing, including clawbacks and accelerators?

What's in writing is what gets paid. Read it before you sign.

  2. 2.

Can I see the actual comp distribution for the team last year, not just the OTE?

The spread shows what most reps really take home. OTE is just the target.

  3. 3.

I'd be walking away from earned commission to join. Is there room for a sign-on bonus to help cover that?

Leaving money behind is a fair reason to ask. The worst answer is no.

You’ll work directly with our Managing Partner, supported by a dedicated proposal team and a multidisciplinary subject-matter expert network. Your focus will be identifying agency needs, opening doors before solicitations are released, and developing qualified opportunities aligned with AlphaGov’s expertise. We are primarily seeking independent contractors interested in commission-based compensation. W-2 employment may be considered for highly qualified candidates with a demonstrated record of winning relevant government business. About AlphaGov AlphaGov helps government and public-sector organizations make informed decisions about their workforce, operations, programs, and investments. We pursue opportunities with cities, counties, state and federal agencies, workforce boards, utilities, transportation authorities, school systems, and special districts. What You’ll Do - Originate and qualify government consulting opportunities aligned with AlphaGov’s services. - Build relationships with agency leaders, program managers, HR executives, and procurement teams. - Identify upcoming needs through agency priorities, procurement forecasts, direct outreach, and industry events. - Develop teaming and subcontracting relationships with government contractors and consulting firms. - Support bid/no-bid decisions and capture planning with buyer insights, competitive intelligence, and positioning recommendations. - Coordinate with our proposal team on sources-sought notices, requests for information, and competitive solicitations. - Maintain clear opportunity records, anticipated procurement timelines, and next steps. - Follow applicable procurement communication rules and AlphaGov’s opportunity approval process. Success means developing relationships and qualified pursuits that lead to business—not simply forwarding public RFP listings. Requirements What We’re Looking For - At least three years of business development experience selling services to federal, state, or local government. - A demonstrated record of originating opportunities, developing productive teaming relationships, or helping secure government contracts. - Working knowledge of public procurement, competitive solicitations, and government sales cycles. - Strong communication, relationship development, and opportunity qualification skills. - Ability to explain your personal contribution to previous pursuits and their outcomes. - Ability to develop a pipeline independently and maintain momentum through lengthy procurement cycles. Experience in either federal contracting or state and local government is sufficient. You do not need an established network across every market. Preferred Experience - Selling consulting, workforce services, research, analytics, organizational improvement, or program evaluation. - Established relationships with buyers in AlphaGov’s service areas. - Capture management for competitive government opportunities. - Developing prime contractor and subcontractor partnerships. Benefits What AlphaGov Provides - Direct collaboration with the Managing Partner. - Dedicated proposal support for approved pursuits. - Access to subject-matter experts for opportunity assessment and technical input. - Defined consulting services and a collaborative approach to capture strategy. Engagement and Compensation We are open to discussing the appropriate arrangement based on your experience, relevant relationships, demonstrated results, and proposed responsibilities. Independent contractor opportunities: Commission-based compensation with no base salary. Commission rates and terms will be agreed in writing before work begins, including eligible opportunities, revenue attribution, and payment timing. Potential W-2 opportunities: Employment may be considered for highly qualified candidates whose experience and proposed scope support an employee role. Compensation and employment terms will be discussed during the selection process. Please indicate your preferred arrangements in the application. Selecting a preference does not guarantee that arrangement will be offered.
