Why it matters: OTE tells you what you could earn. Attainment tells you how realistic it is.

  • "Unlimited earnings," no numbers. It sells uncapped or unlimited earnings but never says what anyone actually earns.

Questions to ask on the first call

Built from what this posting leaves out. How they answer tells you as much as what they say.

  1. 1.

What did the median rep and the top rep actually earn last year?

"Unlimited" is a ceiling, not a number. You need the median.

  2. 2.

What percentage of fully ramped reps hit quota last year?

OTE is what you could earn. This is how likely you are to earn it.

  3. 3.

What percentage of reps on the team have been here more than 18 months?

Tenure shows whether people stay long enough to get paid.

  4. 4.

Has the comp plan changed in the last 12 to 18 months? What changed?

A plan that changes every year means the goalposts keep moving.

  5. 5.

Who sits with reps and reviews calls each week?

Coaching is often what's behind a good or bad attainment number.

  6. 6.

Why is this role open? Did someone leave, or is it new?

New headcount is growth. A replacement means someone left. Ask why.

› When the offer comes

Save these for later. They land better once they've said yes to you.

  1. 1.

Can I see the full comp plan in writing, including clawbacks and accelerators?

What's in writing is what gets paid. Read it before you sign.

  2. 2.

Can I see the actual comp distribution for the team last year, not just the OTE?

The spread shows what most reps really take home. OTE is just the target.

  3. 3.

I'd be walking away from earned commission to join. Is there room for a sign-on bonus to help cover that?

Leaving money behind is a fair reason to ask. The worst answer is no.

Full posting
Alto Software Group is a B2B SaaS company that powers more than half of all UK housing transactions each year. We create software solutions that connect businesses and consumers, delivering a one-stop shop for estate agents and home builders. Our goal is to drive efficiency, speed up transactions, reduce risk, and improve the end-customer experience. While we're not a start-up, we have a start-up mindset and want our people to operate with this mindset so that we can achieve our ambitions. The Role We're looking for a Business Development Representative to turn conversations with independent estate agents into new revenue across the Houseful portfolio. You'll split your time between two jobs. One is converting the inbound enquiries that come to us. The other is finding new opportunities through outbound calls, with both new and existing clients. You'll become the go-to voice for independent agency owners. You'll understand their business well enough to know which of our property marketing, CRM, website and reach products will make a real difference to them. What You'll Do - Qualify and close inbound enquiries quickly, and convert as many of them as possible. - Prospect by phone to open up new business and sell additional products to existing clients. - Grow revenue across the Houseful range: property marketing, CRM software, website products and marketing reach products. - Run a structured contact plan across your allocated accounts, so no customer or prospect goes too long without hearing from us. - Work closely with the territory account managers and the specialist product team, so clients get joined-up advice and access to the right products and partnerships. - Own customer queries and complaints until they're resolved. That includes keeping cancellations down and recovering outstanding payments. - Keep Salesforce accurate and up to date, so the wider team can trust what's in it. - Keep building your knowledge of our products, the market and our competitors, and share useful insight with clients and colleagues. That includes representing Alto at events and conferences when needed. What You Need to Be Successful - Experience in B2B sales, ideally in a consultative role where you've sold on value rather than price. - Strong organisation and time management. You can run an inbound queue and an outbound pipeline side by side without either slipping. - You're comfortable in a fast-moving, target-driven environment and adapt quickly when priorities change. - You're self-motivated, show good judgement and take the initiative. You don't wait to be told what to do next. - Experience helping customers see the value of digital tools and adopt new ways of working. - You're a confident communicator on the phone and in person, with clients and colleagues alike. - Solid working knowledge of Google Sheets/Slides or Excel/PowerPoint. Salesforce experience is a plus. - Strong to have: a background in property, software or digital media, and a track record of selling a varied product portfolio across several channels. There's always room to grow and learn with our roles — please don't be put off if you don't have all of these. It's more important that you're passionate about improving the home moving and owning experience for everyone. Why Join Alto? This role puts you in front of the independent agents who make up the heart of the UK property market, with the whole Houseful portfolio to sell. The variety of inbound, outbound, new business and existing clients means you'll build a well-rounded sales skill set fast. What you earn will reflect the results you deliver. You'll join Alto as the market leader, at a time when we're growing our reach across agency businesses. Your impact will be visible and measurable. Benefits - Uncapped Commission Structure - Remote working - Everyday Flex — Greater flexibility over where and when you work - 25 days annual leave + extra days for years of service - Day off for volunteering & Digital detox day - Festive Closure — Business closed between Christmas and New Year - Cycle to work and electric car schemes - Free Calm App membership - Enhanced Parental leave - Fertility Treatment Financial Support - Group Income Protection & private medical - Gym on-site in London - 7.5% pension contribution by company - Discretionary annual bonus up to 10% of base salary - Talent referral bonus up to £5K We want to make Alto Software Group more welcoming, fair and representative every day. We'll consider everyone who applies for this role in the same way, regardless of your ethnicity, colour, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, age, physical disability, neurodiversity status, family or parental status, or how long you've spent unemployed.
