Red lights

  • Hustle-culture language. Words like rockstar, grind, work hard / play hard, or "no excuses" usually mean long hours and high turnover.

Green lights

None spotted.

Based only on what the posting says. Lights are a starting point for your first call, not a final judgment.

Questions to ask on the first call

Built from what this posting leaves out. How they answer tells you as much as what they say.

  1. 1.

What hours do your best reps actually work?

Hustle language in a posting often shows up in your calendar.

  2. 2.

What percentage of fully ramped reps hit quota last year?

OTE is what you could earn. This is how likely you are to earn it.

  3. 3.

What are the base and the OTE for this role?

No point investing hours before you know the number.

  4. 4.

What's the annual quota, and how was it set?

A quota built from real data is a target. Otherwise it's a hope.

  5. 5.

What share of last year's closed deals did reps source themselves?

Shows how much pipeline you'll have to build on your own.

  6. 6.

Why is this role open? Did someone leave, or is it new?

New headcount is growth. A replacement means someone left. Ask why.

› When the offer comes

Save these for later. They land better once they've said yes to you.

  1. 1.

Can I see the full comp plan in writing, including clawbacks and accelerators?

What's in writing is what gets paid. Read it before you sign.

  2. 2.

Can I see the actual comp distribution for the team last year, not just the OTE?

The spread shows what most reps really take home. OTE is just the target.

  3. 3.

I'd be walking away from earned commission to join. Is there room for a sign-on bonus to help cover that?

Leaving money behind is a fair reason to ask. The worst answer is no.

Lots of yogis too. - Solve a Rubik's cube in under a minute - We had an intern that could and it was mind-blowing. - Bowl a 300 - Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro - Our VP of Operations did this, only blacked-out from high altitude and oxygen deprivation once. Nailed it. - Be a world champion in anything - Youngest Yo-Yo World Champion in history worked with us for years. - Start your own business - Max did...and one guy owns his own photography business...the rest of us are working on it. - A snake shot (Foosball) - Google it. No spinning. Benefits Work hard, play hard is slightly outdated and work life balance implies some sort of struggle to do one and not the other. We think work should be a fun, beneficial, and enjoyable part of your life and that your life should be a fun, beneficial, and enjoyable part of your work. We try our best to provide benefits that make this a reality, and the daily transition and integration of work & life as seamless as possible. - Unlimited Vacation - It's EXACTLY what it sounds like. - Work-From-Anywhere-Flexibility - We set you up from day 1 with all the tools to get shit done regardless of physical location. As for me (the human writing this description) my schedule is Mon/Thurs in office, Tues/Weds/Fri WFH and if something comes up, I might change that from week to week to accommodate. - For the Moms and Dads out there…We have 20+ baby humans in our extended family, needless to say we accommodate the hectic schedules of SuperMoms and SuperDads. 100% flexible schedule helps, but accommodating school drop-offs, and unforeseen events is our specialty and you’ll have the team support to do so with ease. If you would like to speak to one of our parents about their schedule, team support they receive, our maternity/paternity policy and new parent benefits, let us know. - Social gatherings are a regular occurrence. We all actually like hanging out with each other, so we do that a lot including (virtual or in person) team lunches, happy hours, group work sessions, etc. And for those fully-remote outside Miami, there will be one or two occasions throughout the year you can join us in Miami for special events. - Annual 3-day company cruise - It's EXACTLY what it sounds like. - Reimbursement for fitness-related races/events - You train and finish. We pay for it. - Free business books - You read it.
